Obama on side with Canada’s Afghanistan policy

U.S. President Barack Obama suggested Tuesday he will not pressure Prime Minister Steph Harper to keep Canadian troops in Afghanistan longer than 2011 deadline.
In an interview at the White House with CBC television, in advance of his visit to Ottawa on Thursday, Mr. Obama said, "the military alone cannot solve Afghanistan's problems, and that I hope to discuss a "comprehensive" approach to the situation that also focused on diplomacy and development efforts". Even though he is set to approve a military surge that could see an additional 30,000 U.S. troops bound for the Afghanistan, it also appears that Mr. Obama won't use the visit to put Mr. Harper on the spot about extending the combat mission, which Parliament has said must end by 2011. Mr. Obama said that he realizes there are concerns in both countries about a conflict that has lasted quite a long time now and actually appears to be deteriorating at this point. Obama prefaced his remarks by acknowledging the more than 100 Canadian military deaths in Afghanistan. The Canadian contribution has been extraordinary.

I enjoy the fact that Obama has noticed our Canadian troops in Afghanistan, and is showing care for how we feel. Actually my husband is in Afghanistan now but for the american military, he left January 14 2009. I am hopeing Obama also feels the same for his own military, I would love for them to come back home early. But on another note, what are others thoughts on how Obama is handeling the war sitiuation.

  1. It is a good thing that he is looking at both sides. I mean Canada and the US effect each other. If we get attacked the US would come help us because if we were to loose then they are vunerable. Vise Versa too. That is why we are over there helping them, but US started the war, we just came to help, we should not be the ones ending it. I remember hearing something about the fact that Obama wants his army out of there as a promise to his country. But if the job is not done, they should not leave yet, Canadians I believe can leave soon and leave it to the US.
